Ingredients

  • 6 cups thinly sliced peeled apples (Granny Smith works great)
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats (optional for those avoiding oats)
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowls
  • Pastry Cutter or Fork
  • Knife and Cutting Board
  • 9x9-inch Baking Dish
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons

Method

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples. Toss them with a bit of lemon juice to prevent browning.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats (if using), brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. Work the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into a greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
  5. Sprinkle the topping over the apples and press gently.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for about 35–40 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbling.
  7. Let the Apple Crisp cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Don’t skip the lemon juice to keep the apples from browning. Use cold butter for the topping to ensure it stays crumbly. Experiment with spices like nutmeg or cardamom for extra flavor. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days; reheat in the microwave. For freezing, wrap tightly and use within 3 months.
