- In a small bowl, mix dry yeast with sugar and pour in warm milk; stir until dissolved and let sit for 10 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt; make a well and add eggs, oil, and yeast mixture.
- Mix with a wooden spoon until no dry flour remains.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, divide it into three parts, and roll each into a rope about 16-18 inches long.
- Braid the ropes together and place on a greased or parchment-lined baking tray.
- Cover and let proof for 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Beat egg yolk with water and brush over the braided dough, then sprinkle generously with granulated sugar.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown; tap bottom to check for hollowness.
- Allow to cool for 5 minutes on the tray and then transfer to a wire rack for 20-30 minutes before slicing.
