  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs preferably room temperature
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 tsp fresh orange zest
  • 1 cup dark chocolate ganache
  • 1/2 cup orange curd
  • 1/2 cup whipped cream
  • q.s. candied orange slices for decoration
  • q.s. dark chocolate curls for decoration

Equipment

  • 6-inch round cake pan
  • Mixing bowls 2-3
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cooling rack
  • Long serrated knife
  • Offset spatula

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 6-inch cake pan by greasing it and dusting with cocoa powder or flour.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a larger bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil and eggs until smooth, then add the orange juice and zest.
  4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
  6. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Once cool, cut the cake horizontally into two even layers.
  8. Place the bottom layer on a serving plate, spread orange curd on top, followed by whipped cream, then add the top layer.
  9. Pour chocolate ganache over the top and let it drip down the sides. Decorate with candied orange slices and dark chocolate curls.
  10. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving.

Notes

This cake can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days due to the fresh whipped cream and orange curd filling. Cover it loosely. For longer storage, unfilled and unfrosted cake layers can be frozen for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before assembly. Use room temperature eggs for a smoother batter and ensure your ganache is made with quality dark chocolate for the best flavor. Don't skip the cooling step to get clean, beautiful slices!
