- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9x13 inch baking pan by greasing it or lining with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, and spices.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil and eggs until combined, then stir in the applesauce and vanilla.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined. Fold in the raisins (and nuts if using).
- Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool completely in the pan before frosting with the buttercream.
