Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • q.s. Salt and fresh black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices favorite melty cheese American, cheddar, or pepper jack
  • 1 sleeve buttery round crackers (like Ritz), finely crushed
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 4 hamburger buns lightly toasted
  • q.s. Preferred burger toppings lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles
  • q.s. Condiments ketchup, mustard, mayo, or a special sauce

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Large skillet or grill pan
  • Two shallow dishes for egg and crumbs
  • Spatula
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Divide the meat into four equal portions and form them into patties slightly wider than your buns, making a small indent in the center of each.
  3. Set up a coating station with finely crushed crackers in one shallow dish and the beaten egg in another.
  4. Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat and lightly oil it.
  5. Dip each patty into the beaten egg, then press it firmly into the crushed crackers, coating both sides evenly.
  6. Cook the patties in the hot pan for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until your desired doneness.
  7. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each burger to melt.
  8. Toast the buns lightly, then assemble your burger with preferred toppings and condiments.
