Ingredients
  

  • 2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2/3 cup cold milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon optional milk for topping
  • to taste coarse sugar for topping coarse sugar

  • Round cookie/biscuit cutter (2.5-3 inch)

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the cold, cubed butter and mix until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
  4. Stir in the chocolate chips to coat them lightly with flour.
  5. Make a well in the center, pour in cold milk and vanilla, and stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  6. Lightly flour your counter, dump the dough, and knead gently 4-5 times to bring it together.
  7. Pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick and cut out scones using a round cutter.
  8. Place scones on the baking sheet, brush with milk, and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Freshly baked scones are best eaten the same day but can be stored for up to 2 days in an airtight container at room temperature. For longer storage, wrap cooled scones in plastic wrap and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature and reheat to restore their texture.
For extra flavor variations, try orange zest, salted caramel chips, or even nuts in the dough.
