Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup all-purpose wheat flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk dairy or plant-based alternative
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter (1/2 stick)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional) walnuts or pecans

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  2. Whisk together flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. In another bowl, combine milk, melted butter, and vanilla; pour into dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the surface.
  5. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and remaining cocoa powder and sprinkle it over the batter.
  6. Carefully pour hot water over the surface of the pan, do not stir.
  7. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the top looks set and bubbly sauce forms around the edges.
  8. Let it stand for 5-10 minutes before serving; scoop into bowls and serve warm, preferably with vanilla ice cream.
