Ingredients

  • 4 cups cooked chicken, shredded or cubed suitable for rotisserie chicken
  • 6 slices ham, chopped
  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese or substitute with mozzarella
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs panko or regular
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Equipment

  • Casserole dish
  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Mixing bowls
  • Spatula or spoon for spreading

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a 9x13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray or butter.
  2. Spread the cooked chicken evenly in the bottom of the dish.
  3. Scatter the chopped ham over the chicken, then sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese evenly on top.
  4. In a medium saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour for 1-2 minutes until bubbly.
  5. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly until the sauce thickens (about 3-5 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese until smooth.
  6. Pour the sauce evenly over the layers in the casserole and spread gently.
  7. Mix breadcrumbs with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, then sprinkle this mixture evenly on top of the casserole.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the topping is golden brown and edges are bubbling. For an extra crispy top, broil for 1-2 minutes while watching closely.
  9. Let the casserole rest for about 5 minutes before serving.
