Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Pastry Cutter
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Parchment Paper
  • Biscuit Cutter

Method

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder. Sprinkle in Old Bay seasoning if using.
  2. Add the cubed butter to the dry mixture and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Toss in the shredded cheddar cheese and coat it with the mixture. Gradually pour in the buttermilk while stirring gently until the dough comes together.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and pat it into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Cut out rounds using a biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass.
  5. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

For extra-flaky biscuits, chill the shaped dough in the fridge for 15 minutes before baking. Store biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days, or refrigerate for a few more days. You can freeze unbaked biscuits, baking them directly from frozen. Brush the tops with melted butter after baking for a shiny finish, and serve warm with honey butter for a delicious complement.
