Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour plus extra for dusting
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Equipment

  • Stand mixer (optional)
  • Loaf pan (9x5 inches)
  • Kitchen towel
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Parchment paper (optional)

Method

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast, stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, egg, and optional vanilla extract, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  7. Cover again and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350°F and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  9. Let cool before slicing.

Notes

To keep your bread soft, brush the top with melted butter as soon as it comes out of the oven for added moisture. Store the bread in an airtight container or plastic bag to keep it fresh. For longer storage, wrap it tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. Consider using bread flour for a chewier texture or whole wheat flour for a healthier option. Other substitutions include olive oil for butter or a flax egg for an egg-free version. Enjoy experimenting!
