Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 4 cups water for boiling
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. In a small bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and beaten egg. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise for an hour.
  5. Preheat your oven to 425°F. Roll the dough into ropes and cut them into bite-sized pieces.
  6. Boil water with baking soda in a pot, then drop the dough pieces in for 30 seconds.
  7. Transfer them to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Bake the pretzel bites for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Mix melted butter, minced garlic, Parmesan, and parsley. Brush this mixture over the warm pretzels immediately after baking.
